Over The Counter Pain Medications

If your first aid kit is well stocked you can try aspirin or ibuprofen to relieve dental pain and swelling. Don’t apply the powder directly to your gum, rather ingest it even if you have to wait a while for it to take effect. Don’t  overdose either – stick to the recommended maximum and if you can’t get any toothache relief, try some of the remedies we’ve recommended below.

Try A Saline Solution

Sometimes dental pain is caused by food or other debris getting trapped in a cavity or under the gum. You can make a saline solution using warm water and salt. A saline solution is known to bring relief from inflammation and salt kills bacteria. Swish the water around gently in your mouth a few times before spitting it out.

Elevate Yourself

If tooth pain has woken you in the middle of the night with a throbbing mouth, prop yourself up on some extra pillows so that the blood doesn’t pool in your head.

Try Clove Oil

A remarkable remedy for unwanted toothache is clove oil, which can be applied directly to the painful or inflamed area. Clove oil helps with swelling and also has anti bacterial properties. If you don’t have the oil in your house you can grind up a whole clove and mix it with water or a little oil to make a paste.

Use A Cold Compress

If the pain is accompanied by inflammation, you can use a cold compress for toothache relief. Ice can bring swelling down to a comfortable enough level that you may be able to get some sleep. Wrap blocks of ice or a packet of frozen peas in a kitchen towel and apply it gently to the outside of your face. Just don’t put ice directly onto your tooth or gum area.

You can’t always avoid a dental emergency but you can be prepared. Make sure your medicine cabinet is well stocked with items that can assist you with tooth pain relief.
